Greece deployed artificial intelligence cameras across Athens that automatically detect and issue fines for traffic violations. In the first two days of operation, 130 fines were issued, primarily for running red lights and motorcyclists without helmets.

The system includes 8 fixed cameras in the Attica region and 10 cameras mounted on buses for monitoring illegal use of transit lanes. Fines are delivered digitally through a website and mobile app.

The technology can recognize violations in real time and issue fines within minutes. Authorities plan to install 1,000 such cameras across the country by the end of 2026, covering highways, city centers and school zones.

Greece's traffic safety record remains among the worst in the EU, and authorities hope this technology will significantly reduce fatalities and violations. Critics argue the move prioritizes revenue over improving road infrastructure.
