A large bear was spotted in a parking lot in Rostuse, Mavrovo and Rostuse municipality, where it was moving between parked vehicles. The animal retreated after dogs reacted to its presence.

No injuries were reported, but residents are calling for increased caution, especially during evening hours. This incident is part of a trend that has been present in the region for some time.

According to 2023 data, Mavrovo National Park is home to between 160 and 180 brown bears, and local authorities warn that the number has increased significantly in recent years. The bear is a protected species in Macedonia and primarily inhabits the deciduous and mixed forests in the western and southwestern parts of the country.

A special working meeting on the dangers of the growing bear population in the region was held in November 2024, indicating this is an ongoing safety and ecological challenge.
