Bojkovska: Cutting Fuel VAT to 10% Directly Protects Living Standards

Member of Parliament Bojkovska advocated for reducing the value-added tax (VAT) on fuels from the current rate to 10%, arguing that such a measure would directly and immediately protect the living standards of Macedonian citizens struggling with rising costs.

Bojkovska presented calculations showing that a VAT reduction on fuel would have a cascading effect across the economy, lowering transportation costs that feed into the price of virtually all goods and services. She argued this makes it one of the most efficient tools available to combat inflation.

The proposal has gained traction among both ruling coalition members and some opposition figures, though the Finance Ministry has expressed concern about the fiscal impact. Reducing fuel VAT would create a significant hole in the state budget that would need to be offset through other measures.

Consumer advocacy groups have endorsed the proposal, noting that fuel costs disproportionately affect lower-income households and rural populations who depend on personal vehicles. The debate over fuel taxation is expected to intensify as the government prepares its next budget cycle.
