President Donald Trump has repeatedly attacked NATO allies and suggested withdrawing the United States from the Alliance. A law passed in 2023 prevents the president from suspending NATO membership without Senate approval.

However, Trump has alternative mechanisms at his disposal: withdrawing the US ambassador, reducing troop presence (approximately 100,000 soldiers in Europe), suspending intelligence sharing, and refusing Article 5 deployment.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk responded to the statements. European leaders face a dilemma: criticizing Trump risks losing US support for Ukraine, while Europe must urgently increase defense spending.
