A strong earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale struck the Mount Athos peninsula in northern Greece, causing panic among the monks residing in the historic monasteries. Many rushed outside their buildings in fear as the tremor shook the region.

The earthquake's epicenter was located near the monastic community, which is home to 20 Eastern Orthodox monasteries and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Initial reports indicated no major structural damage to the ancient monasteries, though assessments were ongoing.

Greek seismological authorities confirmed the magnitude and noted that several aftershocks followed the main event. The area has moderate seismic activity, but earthquakes of this magnitude are relatively uncommon for the peninsula and caused significant alarm among residents.

Mount Athos, an autonomous monastic state on a rugged peninsula in northeastern Greece, has been a center of Orthodox Christian monasticism for over a thousand years. The monasteries contain priceless religious artifacts and architectural treasures, making seismic safety a particular concern for Greek authorities.
