Health Minister Azir Aliu warned at a professional symposium on obesity that 30 to 35 percent of the population in Macedonia suffers from excess weight, which is linked to over 200 diseases.

"Excess weight is a serious chronic disease linked to over 200 comorbidities - a multisectoral response is key to addressing it," Aliu said, emphasizing the link with cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes.

The Ministry of Health continues to support diabetes programs, providing insulin, glucagon, needles, and blood sugar testing strips, with a special focus on education and disease management.

A first regional center for obesity management in the southwestern part of the country was recently opened in Ohrid, representing a significant step in fighting this health crisis.
