A 43-year-old resident of Gevgelija was arrested after veering off the road in a vehicle carrying six migrants from Egypt, the Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed.
The accident occurred on April 11 around 9:20 PM on the Bogdanci-Gevgelija regional road, at a location known as Sharen Most (Colorful Bridge), when a Volkswagen passenger vehicle with Bulgarian license plates left the roadway.
The driver fled the scene after the accident but was later located and apprehended by police. Six migrants from Egypt were found at the scene, one of whom sustained serious bodily injuries and was transferred to the Mother Teresa Clinical Center in Skopje.
The Ministry stated there is reasonable suspicion of the criminal offense of migrant smuggling, and a public prosecutor from the Gevgelija Basic Public Prosecutor's Office has been notified about the case.
This case is part of a series of incidents linked to illegal transport of migrants through the southern part of the country, particularly in the Gevgelija region, which lies along one of the main transit routes for migration.
