Gjorgjievski: BRT System Becomes Reality - 70 Million Euros Approved

Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski announced that the Government approved the agreement for implementing the project "Introduction of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Skopje."

The BRT system operates on the principle of "metro on wheels" - with dedicated lanes, intersection priority and frequent service. According to Gjorgjievski, the system promises faster, safer and more predictable transport while reducing traffic congestion and pollution.

The agreement establishes the rights and obligations between the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Transport and the City of Skopje during project implementation, including management of funds from a loan by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and formation of a project implementation unit.

The project is valued at 70 million euros and has already been approved. The BRT system represents a modern transit system that should address long-standing mobility problems in the capital.

The project has a controversial history - it was an initiative of the previous SDSM-led government, then blocked by VMRO-DPMNE which deemed it expensive and ineffective, only for the same party to now revive and implement it.
