Greece Sends Frigates and Aircraft to Cyprus After Drone Attacks

Greece sent military capabilities to Cyprus after the island came under a series of drone attacks. Athens deployed two frigates, two F-16 fighter aircraft and a drone interception system — a response described by Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias as an answer to "unprovoked attacks".

Among the incidents that triggered the response was a drone strike on the British military base RAF Akrotiri on Cyprus. The strike narrowly missed two unmanned aircraft flying in the direction of the same base. Paphos airport was evacuated following a suspicious radar signal.

Greek F-16 jets flew over Cyprus airspace, visually confirming the deployment of forces. Minister Dendias announced a visit to Cyprus together with the armed forces chief General Dimitrios Houpis, where he will meet with President Nikos Christodoulides and Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas to coordinate defence strategies.

The deployment of Greek military forces to Cyprus is a clear signal of support for Nicosia under conditions of heightened instability in the eastern Mediterranean. Greece and Cyprus, both EU members, are consolidating their defence positions as regional tensions continue to grow.
