Iran Sets Five Conditions for Ceasefire - Demands Sovereignty Over Hormuz

Iran has formally presented five conditions for agreeing to a ceasefire, with the most contentious demand being full Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints through which roughly 20% of global oil passes.

The five conditions reportedly include: recognition of Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, lifting of all economic sanctions, withdrawal of all foreign military forces from the Persian Gulf, an end to support for opposition groups, and international guarantees for Iran's territorial integrity.

Western diplomats dismissed the conditions as unrealistic and designed to fail, arguing that sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz is a matter of international maritime law and cannot be ceded to any single nation. The US State Department called the demands a non-starter.

Despite the apparent impasse, some analysts believe the conditions represent an opening negotiating position and that Iran may be willing to compromise on several points in exchange for sanctions relief and security guarantees. Diplomatic channels remain open through intermediaries including Oman and Qatar.
