Iranian warship IRIS Dena sank in the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka after being struck by a torpedo. The frigate was returning from military exercises in India when the incident occurred in international waters.

According to the latest information, the ship had around 180 crew members on board. At least 87 deaths have been confirmed, 32 sailors were rescued and are receiving treatment in a hospital in Galle, Sri Lanka, while the search for around 60 missing is still ongoing.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the action, warning of serious consequences. "Remember my words: it will be bitter for those who set this precedent," he said, addressing the US directly.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the operation, noting that the ship was in international waters. According to reports, this is the first case since World War II in which US forces have destroyed an enemy warship in direct combat action.

Sri Lankan medical services are participating in the transfer of bodies of Iranian sailors. Search and rescue operations in the Indian Ocean continue, with both military and civilian vessels involved.
