Iran is going through a historic transition of power following the death of its long-serving supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in an Israeli air strike on Tehran. Iran's clerical body, the Assembly of Experts, swiftly appointed his son Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.

The session was held online due to security concerns, and official confirmation of the decision is expected after Khamenei's funeral. The appointment came under strong pressure and amid escalating security tensions felt across the country.

A temporary advisory council was formed to assume part of the responsibilities during the transition period. Allied organisations, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, are working to ensure the stability and continuity of rule.

Ali Khamenei led Iran for 37 years. His death came in the context of escalating military operations against Iran, following the collapse of negotiations over the country's nuclear programme. Tehran responded with retaliatory strikes against various targets in the region.

Khamenei's funeral is planned at the shrine of Imam Reza in the city of Mashhad. In Tehran and other Iranian cities, citizens have been gathering to mourn the death of the supreme leader who governed the country for nearly four decades.
