Life expectancy in Macedonia five years shorter than EU

Life expectancy in North Macedonia stands at 76.6 years, while the European Union average is 81.5 years, according to the latest Eurostat data. This means Macedonian residents live nearly five years less than EU citizens on average.

Women in Macedonia live an average of 78.86 years, while men live 74.48 years - a gap of 4.4 years. In the EU, the gender gap is slightly wider at 5.2 years.

Madrid has the highest life expectancy in the EU at 85.7 years, while northwestern Bulgaria has the lowest at 73.9 years. Latvia has the largest gender gap in life expectancy at 9.8 years, while the Netherlands has the smallest at 2.8 years.

Compared to the previous period, Macedonia improved its life expectancy by 1.3 years.
