One week of war: Trump rejects ground invasion but wants new leader for Iran

One week into the military conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran, President Donald Trump crystallized Washington's policy: no ground invasion, but the goal is a radical change of leadership in Tehran.

Trump called a ground invasion a waste of time, while simultaneously announcing a complete leadership change in Iran and American involvement in selecting the next Iranian leader. Trump stated Washington is already reviewing candidates for Iran's future leadership and that they must survive to play a role after the conflict.

Trump claims Iran has lost everything — asserting that 60 percent of Iran's rockets and 64 percent of launchers are destroyed, and that more than 2,000 targets have been struck, including dozens of Iranian military vessels and a drone carrier. Defense Secretary Pete Hegset defined the objectives: destroying Iran's offensive missiles, production facilities and naval assets, with special emphasis on preventing nuclear weapons acquisition.

The price has nonetheless been high. Six American soldiers lost their lives in a drone strike on a US military base in Kuwait, and the total conflict death toll has exceeded 1,000. When asked whether Americans should fear Iranian attacks on American soil, Trump replied: Probably. Senator Elizabeth Warren described his remarks on platform X as crazy and dangerous. According to an NBC News poll, 54 percent of voters criticize Trump's Iran policy, while 41 percent support it.
