New wave of strikes hits the Persian Gulf: drone hits building in Bahrain, Dubai echoes with explosions

A new wave of military strikes swept the Persian Gulf region, with loud explosions and sonic booms recorded in Dubai, Manama and several other countries in the region. Iran announced it had attacked US military bases in multiple countries, and shocking video footage showed a drone directly striking a residential building in Bahrain.

Iranian military commanders announced they had struck 27 US military locations over the preceding 24 hours, including four military bases in various Gulf states. The strikes were carried out using missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles in multiple waves.

In Bahrain, the Iranian strike resulted in a direct hit on a residential building in the capital Manama. Video of the drone striking the building spread widely on social media, with the number of casualties unclear at the time of writing. The US Navy base in Bahrain tightened security measures following the attacks.

In the United Arab Emirates, a large part of Dubai was shaken by a series of loud strikes. The civilian population received urgent security notifications and air traffic was temporarily suspended. Qatar also announced it had neutralised incoming projectiles. Several countries closed their airspace and international airlines are rerouting flights.

Regional countries not directly involved in the conflict — particularly Gulf states — find themselves in an unenviable position between Iran's retaliatory wave and the US military presence on their territory. International organisations have called for an immediate ceasefire and diplomatic solutions.
