While Trump Deals With Iran, Putin Quietly Secures Strategic Indian Ocean Position

While American President Donald Trump is focused on the Iran crisis, Russia quietly secured a strategic ally in Madagascar, according to a Bloomberg report. Moscow cemented ties with the island nation after the October coup, sending combat helicopters, trucks, and rice to the new government led by Michael Randrianirina.

Russia's strategic interests focus on access to Madagascar's rich metal and mineral deposits, as well as to the port of Toamasina, which has enormous geopolitical significance due to its proximity to shipping lanes in the Indian Ocean, in immediate proximity to gas-rich Mozambique.

Approximately one third of global oil passes through this maritime route, making the Russian presence far more significant than bilateral relations alone. Control over this strategic point gives Moscow an additional lever in global energy geopolitics.

The move shows that while Washington addresses Middle Eastern crises, Moscow is strategically expanding its network of allies and strengthening positions at key global locations - quietly but effectively.
