Radio Free Europe's Macedonian Service to Close on March 31

The Macedonian service of Radio Free Europe (RFE) will close on March 31, in a blow that marks the end of an era for professional journalism in the country.

RFE's Macedonian language service has operated since 2001, while the media outlet was founded back in 1950 and was funded by the US Congress. The reason for the closure is President Donald Trump's decision to suspend RFE funding.

The same decision also suspended funding for Voice of America, which likewise had a Macedonian language service. Both media outlets were regarded as among the most professional in Macedonia.

The closure of RFE comes after the shutdown of Al Jazeera Balkans several months ago, which also had an office in Macedonia and was considered among the most professional media on the Balkans.

Media experts warn that the loss of these international media services represents a serious blow to citizen information and media pluralism in the country.
