Serbs divided over EU - support drops below 40 percent

Serbs are deeply divided over European Union membership, according to a survey by the Center for European Policies (CEP) conducted on 1,000 respondents from January 19 to February 2.

Only 39.8 percent support EU membership, 33.8 percent are against, and 26.4 percent are undecided. In a potential referendum, 41.6 percent would vote "yes" and 32.4 percent "no."

Trust is low - 41.6 percent believe the EU prioritizes its own political and economic interests over democracy, while 41.8 percent think the Union wants Serbia because of its lithium and natural resources. Some 43.9 percent believe the EU cares more about sanctions against Russia than about Serbian democracy.

Only 6.9 percent believe Serbia will join the EU before 2030, while 23.9 percent think it will never happen. Young people aged 18 to 29 show the greatest support, while those over 60 show the least. A notable fact is that no new negotiation chapter has been opened in over four years.
