Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon said that Israel's death penalty law represents "a clear form of discrimination" against Palestinians.

Fajon stressed that all individuals should be held equally accountable for terrorist acts, but that the death penalty is not an appropriate solution. "Security cannot be built on discrimination, and justice cannot exist without fair treatment," she emphasized.

The Israeli Knesset passed the controversial law through second and third readings with 62 votes for and 48 against, plus one abstention. The law provides for the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners convicted of terrorist acts, while similar charges in Israel are punished with imprisonment. PM Benjamin Netanyahu voted in favor of the measure.

Slovenia is among the few European countries to openly criticize this step, calling it discriminatory and contrary to international human rights standards.
