Tankers Ablaze in Persian Gulf: One Sailor Killed, Iraq Closes Oil Terminals

An Iranian attack struck two oil tankers in Iraqi territorial waters near the port of Umm Qasr, killing at least one crew member and evacuating 38. Iraq declared the temporary closure of oil terminals to ensure security.

The director of the General Company for Iraqi Ports confirmed that commercial ports continue operating. Iraq's state oil company SOMO warned that the attacks "negatively affect Iraq's security and economy," as the majority of Iraqi oil exports flow through the southern terminals.

Security services assessed that the tankers were struck by explosive vessels or naval drones, and the attack is part of a broader escalation in the Persian Gulf in which at least six ships have been attacked. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait also reported intercepted unmanned aerial vehicles.

As a result, Brent crude oil surged above $100 per barrel. Analysts warn that continued attacks and unsafe navigation conditions through the Strait of Hormuz could further increase global energy prices.
