President Trump has asked Congress for $152 million to reopen the notorious Alcatraz prison - today a museum and tourist attraction on an island in San Francisco Bay - to transform it back into a "premier and secure correctional facility."

The request is part of the 2027 budget, in which the White House seeks a total of $1.7 billion for "deteriorating prisons" across the US. Alcatraz is allocated $152 million for the first year.

Trump previously announced he had directed relevant authorities to renovate and reopen the facility. "The Rock," as it is known, served for 29 years as America's most heavily guarded prison, housing "the worst of the worst." Notable inmates included Al Capone and "Machine Gun" Kelly.

The prison opened in 1934, housing 1,576 individuals over its lifetime. Today approximately 1.2 million tourists visit annually.
