Authorities received 42 reports of domestic violence in just two weeks, a figure that officials say reflects not a surge in violence but a growing willingness among victims to come forward and seek help.

The reports were filed across multiple municipalities, with the highest numbers recorded in Skopje, Bitola, and Kumanovo. Cases ranged from physical assault to psychological abuse and threats.

"For too long, domestic violence was treated as a private family matter," said the head of the national domestic violence prevention unit. "These numbers tell us that victims are no longer willing to stay silent, and that is a positive development."

Authorities attribute the increase in reporting to awareness campaigns, improved police training in handling domestic violence cases, and the availability of new support services including shelters and legal aid hotlines.

Despite the progress, advocates warn that significant challenges remain. Many victims still face barriers to reporting, including economic dependence on abusers, fear of retaliation, and distrust of the justice system. Organizations are calling for stronger legal protections and guaranteed funding for victim support services.
