One French soldier was killed and six more were wounded in a drone attack on a military base in the Erbil region in northern Iraq, where the French are conducting anti-terrorist operations against the Islamic State. French President Emmanuel Macron sharply condemned the attack.

"This attack on our forces, who have been fighting against Daesh since 2015, is unacceptable. The war in Iran cannot justify such attacks," Macron wrote on platform X. He emphasized that France's presence in Iraq is exclusively within the framework of the fight against terrorism.

The attackers used two drones on the base near Mahmur, approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Erbil. The wounded were evacuated to medical facilities. The Governor of Erbil called the attackers "terrorist militias in Iraq", criticizing the Iraqi government for not taking serious measures.

Iran and pro-Iranian militias in Iraq have been constantly attacking the US-led Global Coalition bases since the US-Israeli conflict with Iran began. France has hundreds of soldiers in the Erbil region as part of the international coalition.
