One French soldier was killed and six others were wounded in a drone attack on a military base in the Erbil region in northern Iraq, where French forces are conducting counter-terrorism operations against the Islamic State. French President Emmanuel Macron sharply condemned the attack.

"This attack on our forces, who have been fighting Daesh since 2015, is unacceptable. The war in Iran cannot justify such attacks" - Macron wrote on platform X. He emphasized France's presence in Iraq is exclusively within the framework of fighting terrorism.

The attackers used two drones against the base near Mahmur, approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Erbil. The wounded were evacuated to medical facilities. The Erbil governor called the attackers "terrorist militias in Iraq", criticizing the Iraqi government for not taking serious action.

Iran and pro-Iranian militias in Iraq have been continuously attacking bases of the US-led Global Coalition since the US-Israeli conflict with Iran began. France has hundreds of soldiers in the Erbil region as part of the international coalition.
