The new composition of the supervisory boards of Skopje public enterprises has sparked controversy. Among the 117 temporarily appointed members, party donors, people linked to previous municipal administrations and close relatives of current officials have been identified.
Particularly strong reactions were provoked by the appointment of Cvetanka Igneva-Mikev to the Board of the public utility Parks and Greenery. She is connected to the family of Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski - she previously donated 29,000 denars in 2019 and 50,000 denars in 2021 to VMRO-DPMNE. Her husband is an adviser in the Ministry of Agriculture.
Mayor Orce Djordjevski defends the appointments, claiming he personally knows all the candidates and vouches for their quality. Critics point out that the appointments follow familiar patterns of political patronage rather than merit-based selection.
Among other appointees, persons have been documented who previously sat on boards without proven results, as well as party donors linked through various political affiliations.
The boards of public enterprises control significant budgets, contracts and infrastructure projects - making their composition a matter of public interest. The case again opens debate about transparency and institutional integrity in Skopje's city government.
