Serbia's Chinese Missiles Can Reach Skopje: EU Warns, Region Alarmed

Serbia opened a new security and political question in the Balkans after President Aleksandar Vučić confirmed the country had acquired Chinese CM-400AKG missiles, following the publication of photos of MiG-29s with new armaments.

Belgrade became the first European state confirmed to possess this system, immediately causing regional anxiety. Public reports on the CM-400AKG show varying range figures - some analyses cite approximately 240-250 kilometers for export versions, while other sources mention a range of up to 400 kilometers.

Croatia has already raised the issue at NATO, while Kosovo's defense minister accused Vučić of lying about the missiles. The European Commission issued a warning to Serbia, emphasizing that the European path requires clear strategic choices.

For Macedonia, this carries no direct practical military implication, but it has clear security significance. When neighboring territories acquire longer-range, faster, and harder-to-intercept weaponry, the psychology of regional deterrence shifts. The Balkans is entering a phase where what is measured is not just armies and budgets, but messages, symbolism, and fears.
