Cockroaches on Bread, Ruins from the Last Century: Union Exposes Catastrophic Army Conditions

The Independent Union of Professional Military Personnel claims that while the defense minister promotes renovated facilities at the "Jane Sandanski" barracks in Shtip, 90 percent of soldiers live in ruined buildings from the Yugoslav People's Army era that have not been renovated in 35 years.

"Look at the facilities built by the former JNA that have not been renovated since, where 90% of professional soldiers live — not a single investment in 35 years. Look at the sanitary conditions and dining facilities in the largest kitchen in Macedonia," stated union president Aleksandar Naskovski.

The union accuses that cockroaches walk on bread intended for soldiers, and conditions in army facilities are catastrophic.

They attribute this campaign to the criticism they previously directed at conditions in the Army, including hygiene problems, scabies outbreaks at the barracks in Veles, and reports of worn-out bedding and mattresses.

The union claims that despite a record military budget, the minister boasts about "modern infrastructure" by renovating only select facilities, while Macedonia has ten more barracks and hundreds of buildings requiring urgent renovation.
