US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced a blockade of maritime traffic to and from Iranian ports, starting this afternoon, in a dramatic escalation of tensions between Washington and Tehran.

The American leadership stated that the action will target all vessels attempting to transit through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Maritime tracking companies report that ships immediately halted transit following the announcement, with some even changing course.

Iranian naval forces responded with derision - one commander characterized the threats as "very funny and absurd". On the other hand, Iranian military representatives warned they would act harshly against any military vessel that approaches the area.

On international markets, crude oil prices surged by approximately 7-8 percent following the blockade announcement, reflecting market concerns about global energy supply.

The Australian prime minister confirmed that Canberra had not been asked to assist with the blockade, while tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to grow over nuclear capabilities and regional stability.
