Chinese caught off guard by Putin move: Silence in Beijing

Chinese analysts expressed surprise at the measured response of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the escalating conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran.

According to Chinese portal Sohu, Putin's behavior during the Iran crisis sharply contrasted with what Beijing observers had expected. While the initial US military operation aimed for a swift victory, Iran refused to yield and launched counterattacks, forcing Washington to change strategy.

The analysis suggests Putin likely anticipated the potential US military action against Iran and therefore remained composed throughout the crisis. Moscow stayed focused on seeking political solutions rather than issuing provocative rhetoric.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned Russia not to interfere in US-Israeli operations against Iran. However, this followed a recent phone call between Trump and Putin, during which the Russian leader reportedly proposed approaches for reaching a negotiated settlement.

Chinese observers described Putin's approach as a "subtle maneuver" deserving deeper geopolitical analysis.
