The Municipality of Saraj issued an official ban on movement along the hiking and mountain trails in Matka Canyon, effective from 26 February 2026. The measure was issued based on an expert assessment by the Directorate for Protection and Rescue due to serious risk of rockslides and landslides.

Hikers and tourists who visited the trails in recent weeks report accelerated terrain instability. "Every other foothold is unstable," said hiker Ilina Arsova, warning of increased danger due to recent rainfall and saturated terrain. The official ban confirms that the risk is serious and documented.

According to the Municipality of Saraj's document (No. 57-2071-1), the ban will remain in force until the competent authorities confirm the terrain is safe for movement. There is no set date for the trails to reopen, as this depends on geological inspections and weather conditions.

Matka Canyon is one of the most visited natural sites near Skopje. Each weekend it attracts a large number of hikers, kayakers and tourists, with interest increasing significantly during spring. Authorities urge all visitors to strictly observe the restriction signs and not risk entering the dangerous zone.

The competent authorities also warn that violating the ban is not only a personal risk, but also endangers rescue teams that would be required to intervene. The situation will be monitored and the public informed when the trails are safe to reopen.
