The Skopje municipality council of Centar has adopted two new detailed urban plans (DUPs) for the area around the Kale fortress. The plans provide for a significant improvement of public space with emphasis on pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, parks and sports facilities.

Instead of the existing hotel complexes, the new DUPs provide for public and sports facilities: a sports facility of 9,295 square meters on state land along the river, parks with a total green area of 5,354 square meters, and public parking spaces.

The plans also provide for new cycling paths on "Samuilova" and "Lazar Licenovski" streets, which will connect with the recreational path along the Vardar river. The municipality emphasizes the goals: creating an organized and connected public space accessible to citizens, with opportunities for permanent outdoor museum exhibitions that will enrich the historical and cultural value of the fortress.
