Opposition leader Peter Magyar won the parliamentary elections in Hungary with a convincing majority, putting an end to the rule of Viktor Orban which lasted more than a decade.

Magyar's Tisza party secured 132 out of 199 parliamentary seats according to preliminary results, while Orban's Fidesz party won only 59 seats, moving into opposition. Tisza gained 93 seats through direct candidates and 39 through party lists, while the Fidesz-Christian Democrats coalition won 46 list seats and 13 direct seats.

Prime Minister Orban congratulated Magyar on the election victory by phone, Magyar himself confirmed on his Facebook page. "Prime Minister Viktor Orban congratulated us on the victory by phone," Magyar wrote.

The far-right party "Our Homeland" won eight parliamentary seats, rounding out the new parliamentary composition that promises significant changes in Budapest's foreign and domestic policy.

The result is considered a historic turning point in Hungarian politics and could bring fundamental changes in the country's relationship with the European Union and NATO.
