The tragedy in Skopje's Karpoš neighbourhood, where a mother and her small child died, has become the focus of a fierce political debate in Macedonia. SDSM demanded the resignation of Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski, claiming that institutions were alerted but failed to respond accordingly.

"Instead of telegrams of condolences, Toshkovski should have done something," SDSM stated, accusing those responsible of an institutional failure in the system for protecting domestic violence victims.

VMRO-DPMNE responded sharply, accusing SDSM of using tragedies "strictly for political points." The party pointed out that when SDSM was in opposition, it used similar cases for political gain. "When they came to power, they forgot," the party's statement read.

VMRO-DPMNE stressed that "today the work is carried out transparently and the perpetrators have names and surnames," and called on no one to exploit tragedies for political purposes.

Minister Toshkovski had previously disclosed the details of the incident and issued a firm order for police to intervene at the slightest suspicion of domestic violence, regardless of the victim's statement.
