Struga Without Drinking Water for 19 Days: Ban Remains Despite Reduced Turbidity

Citizens of Struga have been living without drinking water for 19 days, with no end to the crisis in sight. Despite a slight reduction in turbidity levels, authorities announced that the ban on drinking water remains in force until three consecutive normal measurements are recorded across the entire system.

Measurements show that turbidity in the city is currently ranging between 0.62 and 1.73 (permitted limit: 1.5). Three measuring points already show normal values, but the "Šum" spring – the key water supply source – still records turbidity of 6.61, compared to 1.46 the previous day.

The crisis began after construction near the water supply sources in the village of Šum caused a sudden increase in turbidity. On 9 February, extreme values of 28.56 were recorded – far above the permitted limit. The mayor links the situation to excavation work carried out in previous years.

The Basic Public Prosecution in Struga initiated proceedings and imposed measures against two legal entities from Veles, restricting their access to the parcels where the work was performed. However, the public is still demanding concrete accountability and a permanent solution for the water supply.

The city is currently supplied through alternative sources from Belica and the village of Zagračani. Citizens continue to receive water via tanker trucks, but demands for a permanent supply of safe drinking water remain unanswered.
