VMRO-DPMNE and SDSM Trade Sharp Accusations Over the Grubi Case

The case of former speaker of Parliament Artan Grubi has turned into an arena of political exchanges between VMRO-DPMNE and SDSM. Following the indictment for domestic violence against Grubi, both parties exchanged sharp statements, each accusing the other of political manipulation.

VMRO-DPMNE representative Brane Petrusevski stated that "SDSM was an accomplice in Grubi's crime" and that because of this the opposition today is defending him so strongly. He added that if Grubi testifies before the accusers, a large number of former SDSM officials will have to answer before the judiciary – naming former party leaders Zaev, Spasovski, Zechevic and Filipche.

SDSM, meanwhile, describes the whole Grubi affair as a "pre-agreed circus". The party claims that the Prosecution, nominally under the control of Kristijan Mickoski, founded the indictment for domestic violence on security assessments of MVR and ANB – assessments that its existence daily undermines the director of the prison Shutka.

"Everything said so far is proving to be a lie" – such is the stance of the opposition, which points to contradictory statements about whether a security assessment even exists, whether it is classified, and whether foreign services gave warnings. SDSM claims that these contradictions only reinforce the thesis of a monitored court process.

The case continues to fuel tensions in Macedonian political life and to draw public interest in the issue of the rule of law. VMRO-DPMNE calls for a thorough investigation, while SDSM denies responsibility for the alleged institutional abuses.
