Macedonian Telecom Market: Phone Calls Decline as User Numbers Grow

The Macedonian telecommunications market is undergoing a familiar digital transformation: the number of subscribers continues to grow while traditional voice calls are in steady decline.

According to the latest industry data, the average Macedonian mobile user makes approximately 105 calls per month, spending about 3.8 hours in total on voice conversations. Both figures represent a continued decline as messaging apps and other digital communication tools replace traditional phone calls.

On the infrastructure side, however, the news is more positive. Fiber optic broadband connections have grown by 20 percent, reflecting ongoing investment in high-speed internet infrastructure across the country. The expansion is being driven by the market's two dominant players, Telekom and A1, both of which are competing to extend their fiber networks.

The shift mirrors trends seen across Europe and the broader global market, where data consumption is growing exponentially while voice traffic plateaus or declines. Industry analysts note that Macedonia's telecom sector remains competitive, with the duopoly between Telekom and A1 driving investment and keeping prices relatively affordable for consumers. The challenge for operators will be monetizing the growing demand for data while managing the decline in their traditional revenue streams.
