When the ATM won't give out money, some reach for a bigger axe. In the centre of Resen last night a man violently damaged a Sparkasse bank ATM - hitting it with an axe, while the whole scene was filmed and soon ended up on social media.
The clip is comic and sad at the same time: a man swinging an axe at a banking machine in the middle of town, as if in some grotesque performance. The police took action after the video surfaced, and in connection with the incident, according to available information, a suspect woman from Shtip has already been detained. What exactly triggered the attack - rage, desperation, or something else - isn't clear for now.
Behind the funny clip there's a harder picture. When people reach for an axe against a banking machine, it's rarely just vandalism - more often it's a symptom of something that's built up. It doesn't justify the act, but the question is worth asking: what has to go wrong in a person's life for them to end up in the morning in front of an ATM with an axe in hand? It's easy to laugh at the clip; it's harder to ask what's behind it.
