The Suspect in the Torching of the Bulgarian Vehicles Has Confessed: What Smoulders Behind a Single Spark

The man suspected of setting fire to two Bulgarian diplomatic vehicles outside Bulgaria's embassy in Skopje has confessed to the act at a police station. He is a 44-year-old, against whom the Interior Ministry has filed criminal charges for causing general danger. The incident happened on 15 June, and the confession was announced two days later.

The Interior Ministry boasted of its speed - the suspect was identified and detained in a short time. And that's good. But the event itself raises a question bigger than one torched car: why now, and why specifically Bulgarian diplomatic vehicles? Setting fire to someone's diplomatic vehicles isn't ordinary crime-blotter news - it's an act that goes straight into the already tense relations between Skopje and Sofia.

The reactions were swift and from the top. Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski condemned the incident and confirmed that the perpetrator had been secured by the police, while the Macedonian ambassador in Sofia was summoned for talks at the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry. In other words, one man's act instantly became a diplomatic matter between two states.

The question that hangs in the air is whether this is the isolated act of an individual, or a symptom of something deeper smouldering between the two peoples. The authorities will say it's the former - that's more comfortable. But the tension between Skopje and Sofia is no secret to anyone, and every incident like this is a spark thrown into dry hay. Who has an interest in seeing that hay catch fire?
