Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski hosted Matthew G. Whitaker, the US Permanent Representative to NATO, for security cooperation talks. The visit included a tour of the "Ilinden" barracks in Skopje, with Defense Minister Vlado Misajlovski and the Army Chief of Staff in attendance.

Mickoski announced "a new impetus in relations with the US, with security as the first priority." Macedonia is increasing its defense budget and modernizing its army to meet NATO standards. The official message: a credible ally with significant investments in modernization.

The visit comes at a time when European security architecture is shifting - Germany is producing weapons instead of cars, American guarantees are less certain, and NATO is reassessing priorities. In this context, Macedonia as a small country must demonstrate it contributes, not just that it holds membership.

Is the increased defense budget an investment in security or the price of staying relevant? In NATO, as everywhere, the rule applies: whoever pays gets a voice. Macedonia is paying the bills for now - the question is whether its voice will be heard.
