American Seriously Injured by Paraglider Near Bitola: How Regulated Is the Adrenaline Tourism We Advertise

Summer adrenaline has once again turned into tragedy. A 59-year-old American citizen was seriously injured while landing a paraglider near Bitola, a reminder that the beautiful views from the air come with a risk rarely mentioned in tourist ads.

The accident happened on July 5, around 15:52, near the Zabeni industrial zone, in the area of Bitola. On landing, the American citizen sustained serious bodily injuries. The Interior Ministry said the case was reported to the Bitola police, which is taking measures to clarify the circumstances.

Macedonia has for years advertised itself as a destination for adventure tourism - paragliding, hiking, wilderness untouched by mass tourism. And that is good, because the region really does have something to offer. But every piece of news like this opens the uncomfortable question of safety: how regulated are these activities, who oversees them, and what happens when a foreigner is seriously injured far from home?

While the adrenaline industry grows, oversight often lags behind. Not to scare anyone off flying - but to ask whether behind the beautiful view there is also a system that will respond when things go wrong. The beauty of our mountains is not in question. What is in question is whether we are ready for everything that comes with it.
