Grey's Anatomy's Isaiah Washington Confirms His Wife's Death After 16 Months of Silence: "Some Headaches Aren't Just Headaches"

"Yes... the rumours are true." With that sentence, Isaiah Washington, the actor who played Dr Preston Burke on Grey's Anatomy, put an end in early October to months of speculation. His wife, Jenisa Marie Garland, had died. Not recently, but 16 months ago.

In an Instagram post, alongside a photo of her, the 61-year-old actor laid out the timeline without embellishment. "My dear wife, to whom I was married for 29 years, suddenly collapsed on May 31, 2025, and passed away on June 9, 2025." Nine days in hospital, no recovery, at the age of 56. "It was a huge blow to me and to our entire family. She suffered a massive haemorrhagic stroke and never recovered." From her death to the post, 481 days had passed.

Instead of sympathy for himself, Washington asked for attention to something else. "Listen, people... some headaches aren't just headaches or migraines. They can be something much worse and a warning sign. If you can, get a brain scan and take those headaches seriously." How many times do we push a bad headache away with a pill and carry on as if nothing happened?

A marriage kept out of the lens

The two met completely by chance, at a dinner in Los Angeles in the 1990s. He was just starting out then, with small parts in Crooklyn, Clockers and Girl 6, and she was working as a fashion designer in the California industry. After a short courtship they married on 14 February 1996 and had three children - Tyme, Isaiah Petty and Iman.

Nearly three decades of life beside a man whose face half the world knows, yet almost nothing of the family in public. That was her boundary, and according to Washington, that boundary is partly the reason for the long silence. He himself hesitated over whether he should speak at all: "I don't know if this post is appropriate, because Jenisa Washington was an extremely private person, but I guess I'll have to put up with her scolding me from the other side."

At a time when celebrity grief is posted live, with a hashtag and a link, one actor kept a death to himself for almost a year and a half. He didn't turn it into content. He only made it public when the rumours left him no choice - and used it to warn someone else not to meet the same end. "It's been 16 months since she left, but she left three wonderful children who will carry on her legacy."
