American saxophonist James Carter comes to Zagreb's Tvornica kulture on 4 October with a quartet and a programme dedicated to John Coltrane. The show is part of the seventeenth Zagreb Jazz Festival and starts at 8 pm.

Carter was born in Detroit and has been among the most prominent names in American jazz for a long time. What he is known for is instrumental flexibility: he plays the whole family of saxophones and clarinets and moves through genres that most musicians treat as separate worlds. In 2022 he released "D(IVO)", the debut album of his saxophone quartet with Tim Berne, Tony Malaby and Ivo Perelman.

The programme "Trane: A Centennial Supreme" is his way of marking a hundred years since John Coltrane's birth. That is a hard body of material to pick up: Coltrane is not a composer whose work you play off the page, he was a musician whose performance was the whole point. Anyone taking on that repertoire has to bring their own approach, otherwise it is just copying.

Tvornica kulture is one of Zagreb's main concert venues and the room where the festival regularly puts its bigger names. Tickets through entrio.hr go up to 32 euros, roughly 1,971 denars.
