England beat Czechia 3:0 at Wembley in the Nations League for a third straight win. Harry Kane played his 125th game for his country, equalling Peter Shilton's record for the most appearances in an England shirt. The first goal was an own goal by Vladimír Coufal in the 27th minute, from a cross aimed at Kane, and then the captain added two of his own: in the 40th minute from a Morgan Rogers assist, and in the second half from a Lewis Hall pass. At 33, Kane became the oldest England player to score twice in two consecutive matches. In November come Croatia on the 12th and Spain three days later, in a match that could decide who tops the group.
An independent commission has found Manchester City guilty on 114 of 115 charges of financial breaches across nine seasons, from 2009/10 to 2017/18. According to the ruling, the club brought in over 830 million pounds through fake commercial deals disguised as sponsorship, and inflated revenues and understated costs by a total of more than 900 million pounds. Five of the charges directly concern UEFA's financial fair play rules, but UEFA won't move while the appeal City lodged last Thursday is ongoing. There is no sporting sanction for now, and the club is playing as if nothing had happened. City were already once handed a two-year European ban and a 30 million euro fine in 2020, which the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned. How many times does guilt have to be proven before someone actually pays?
Barcelona are keeping Raphinha until 2030 instead of 2028; the deal is practically done and the official announcement could come any day now. The Brazilian (29) arrived from Leeds in 2022 for 55 million pounds and has since made 185 appearances with 89 goals and 62 assists. This season he wears the captain's armband, has 12 goals in seven games and is La Liga's top scorer, plus two goals against Feyenoord at the start of the Champions League. The only worry is a thigh injury picked up in Brazil's friendly against Australia, so Hansi Flick may rest him for the games against PSG and Real Madrid later in October. Barça are five points clear at the top of the table - hard to find a better moment to sign.
Macedonia lost 0:3 to Switzerland in Lucerne, rounding off the autumn part of the Nations League with four defeats in four games. Fabian Rieder opened the scoring in the 43rd minute after Ezgjan Alioski's back pass to Visar Musliu ended up with the opposition. Johan Manzambi scored from around 25 metres in the 74th, and Dan Ndoye punished Matej Gashtarov's lost ball outside our penalty area in the 81st. Switzerland didn't have to work very hard - every goal came from one of our mistakes. Gjoko Zajkov after the match: "We're aware the public is disappointed, but we feel the same." Around 1,000 fans sang in Lucerne until the final minute, and they at least played their part. November brings a trip to Scotland and Slovenia at home.
One number tells the whole story: 787 minutes without scoring. Under head coach Goce Sedloski, the national team has gone eight games without a win and without a single goal - 720 minutes of emptiness - and the overall winless run has reached 12 games. In three of the four Nations League games we didn't have a single shot on target. If we don't score in Scotland or against Slovenia, it will be a full year since Macedonia's last goal. Zajkov hopes "luck will come back", but how many more minutes will it take for someone at the Football Federation to admit that the problem isn't luck?
