American guitarist and composer Mary Halvorson plays Zagreb's Histrionski dom on November 23 at 8 p.m., as part of the 17th Zagreb Jazz Festival. With her is the new quartet Canis Major.
Halvorson lives in Brooklyn and is considered one of the most original guitarists in contemporary jazz. In 2019 she received a fellowship from the MacArthur Foundation, known as the "genius grant". In 2022 she debuted on the Nonesuch label with two parallel albums, "Amaryllis" and "Belladonna": the first with a sextet of improvisers, the second with guitar and the Mivos string quartet.
Canis Major is a new quartet with an entirely new repertoire, written specially for this line-up: Dave Adewumi on trumpet, Henry Fraser on bass and Tomas Fujiwara on drums. The group has already recorded material for its first Nonesuch album, and in September 2026 played four sets at New York's Close Up club. The music is angular, lyrical and unpredictable - jazz for those who want to be surprised, not soothed.
Tickets cost 30 euros (about 1,848 denars) and are sold via entrio.hr, with seat selection. Histrionski dom is at Ilica 90 in Zagreb, Croatia.
