Ten Laptops Hidden in a Rental Car: A 13,000-Euro Smuggling Run Stopped at Bogorodica

Ten new "Dell" laptops, worth about 13,000 euros, hidden in several spots inside a rental car - that's what customs officers intercepted at the Bogorodica border crossing. The vehicle was driven by a Macedonian citizen who tried to bring them into the country without declaring them and without paying duties.

According to the customs administration, the suspect had earlier picked up the laptops from a cargo company in Thessaloniki, packed them into the rental vehicle in a parking lot, and headed for the border. The officers carried out a detailed inspection based on a "selected profile and reasonable suspicion" - in other words, the vehicle wasn't chosen at random.

A criminal complaint for smuggling was filed with the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Gevgelija. The Customs Administration announced stepped-up controls at all border crossings, with the usual explanation - protecting the state's financial interests.

The story is small in scale, but it says something bigger. When the smuggling of ten laptops becomes news, it's also a reminder of how much the gap in prices and duties still pushes people to risk a criminal complaint over goods that are cheaper next door. The question isn't only how they caught him this time - it's how many such cars get through when the profile doesn't "click."
