Earthquake Woke Ohrid and Struga at 05:36: A Weak Tremor, but Also a Quiet Question About Readiness

The people of Ohrid and Struga woke up earlier than they planned today. At 05:36 in the morning, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3 on the Richter scale shook beds across the Ohrid-Struga region, with its epicenter in the waters of Lake Ohrid, near the border with Albania.

According to the seismological observatory at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Skopje, the tremor was recorded at a depth of about 10 kilometers, with an intensity of level III on the European Macroseismic Scale. That means it was felt indoors, but without significant consequences or material damage.

No injuries or damage were reported. The authorities called on citizens who felt the tremor to fill out a questionnaire on the observatory's website or to call 112 - data that helps with seismological research.

A weak quake, negligible damage - on paper, routine. But for a region sitting on a seismically active zone, one that historically remembers devastating tremors, every 05:36 wake-up is also a reminder. Not for panic, but for the question we rarely ask while everything's calm: how ready are our buildings, schools and hospitals if next time the number doesn't stop at three?
