Skopje breathed smoke from three sides, and the dump did not appear on Sunday

Last night the city got a choice between an open window and clean air. Three fires filled Skopje with smoke - an illegal dump full of accumulated waste is burning near the "Stenkovec" sports airfield, the blaze at Ramno on Skopska Crna Gora has been fought for two days, and two more broke out in the afternoon, in Kondovo and in Gjorche Petrov. Stojanche Angelov, head of the Directorate for Protection and Rescue, said the truest part out loud: what is burning is accumulated waste, which means even more smoke. Accumulated. That illegal dump did not materialise on Sunday afternoon - it built up there while somebody looked the other way, and there are at least 30 active open fires in the country, unusually many for September.

The eighth fever death came after the spraying was already finished

A 70-year-old man from Drachevo is the eighth person to die of West Nile fever this season. In the fifteen years before it, from 2011 to 2025, five people died in total. There were 56 confirmed cases by 1 September, against 54 for that entire earlier period. The calendar is the part worth reading closely: an epidemic declared on 12 August, aerial spraying on 20 and 21 August, ground spraying from 23 to 26 August - after a patient had already died. Mosquitoes are not an unpredictable phenomenon. They are seasonal, they breed in standing water, and they show up in the same places every year.

A job in the public service cost 1,500 euros

The driver of government general secretary Igor Janushev will spend 30 days in custody, after prosecutors established that he asked a Skopje man for 1,500 euros to arrange a firefighter job with the City of Skopje. He was caught holding 500 marked euros. Janushev distanced himself - the driver had been with him for about six months and had previously driven other officials. The government reads the case as proof that the system works and that a clear line is being drawn. You can read it that way. You can also read it another way: in two years, bribery has surfaced at the agriculture directorates, in the prime minister's security detail, and now among the general secretariat's drivers. The line gets drawn every time somebody is caught, and this time the first move was not made by any institution - it was made by the citizen who refused to pay.

Whose job is it to warn him before the first payment

The same day, a 70-year-old from Skopje reported losing 720,000 denars. No hacked account, no crypto platform - just conversations with a man who said he had to treat a son abroad, and then that he had a water bill to settle. The payments ran from January to the end of February; the report was filed only on 5 September. The interior ministry says measures are being taken to clarify the case, a formulation that has never returned anyone a single denar. The advice to be careful is correct, but it arrives after the money is gone.

Four million passengers and one number left unbroken down

Deputy prime minister Aleksandar Nikoloski announced that the two airports will go from about two million passengers a year to four this year, thanks to "exceptionally wise policy". The doubling is a real number and nobody is taking it away. The question is what it measures: a passenger is both the person arriving on holiday and the person leaving for work, and the four million is the sum of two airports in both directions, transit included. If the policy is that wise, a broken-down statistic would show it far more convincingly than a rounded figure on television. The same logic applies to the five motorways being built at once, where the real test is not the number of construction sites but October and the tunnels at Preseka.

The train runs 28 minutes, the walk to the station takes half an hour

Skopje now has a city train that carried 1,500 passengers in three days, punctual and air-conditioned. What is missing is not the train but everything around it: reaching the station in Drachevo means half an hour on foot, and the proposal for an integrated ticket valid on buses too was voted down in the Skopje City Council back in July. The infrastructure is in place, but the link between it and the person meant to use it has been left for later.

The prosecution picks its chief, the church gets the name wrong again

Five people are competing for the chair from which every case against officials is run - Abazi is not seeking a second term, the vote is on 28 October, and the prosecutors themselves decide, by secret ballot. Among the applicants is a man from the ranks of the former Special Prosecutor's Office. Meanwhile, the Serbian Orthodox Church got the name of the Macedonian church wrong again, this time using the abbreviation POA - which until 2023 denoted a parallel structure under Belgrade's jurisdiction. The same "mistake" twice is not a printing error.

The police bulletin and the tents at Galichnik

A single police bulletin carried eight domestic violence reports - Skopje, Kumanovo, Kavadarci, Shtip, Gostivar. Partner, former partner, husband in divorce proceedings, son, daughter-in-law, minor child: every relationship inside a household appeared at least once on the same day. At Galichnik, meanwhile, an 85-minute operation ended with five people detained and drugs found in tents at the Stopanche site.

From Tikvesh to Shtip, money goes where there is a signature

The harvest is more than 13 million kilograms smaller than last year, the minister promised a 25 percent higher price and a 540-million-denar credit line for the wineries, and some growers still have no contract - in Kavadarci the music plays while the grapes in the fields wait for a signature. At the same time, the Isar fortress above Shtip is getting a 1.5-million-euro restoration, paid for with the Hungarian loan, with an 18-month deadline and three viewpoints. Both stories are about the same money from the same budget, only at different decision speeds.

Beyond us: the Danube, Moscow and 44.5 percent for the AfD

The crossing towards Romania was shut by drones for the second time in a week - when the same point is hit twice in seven days, that is no longer an error in the coordinates, and on the far bank of the river sits a NATO member. American envoys spent three and a half hours with Putin and brought back everything except a deal, while Patriot production only ramps up in 2027, which says more about the peace people expect than any summit does. In Germany, the AfD took 44.5 percent in Saxony-Anhalt, and in Serbia Vucic attacks the opposition over what it would hypothetically do - a mechanism the whole Balkans knows by heart.

And to close, something lighter

Vardar are back in the Champions League after four years, and the derby in Ohrid ended with a goal in the last second. Neno Dimitrijevikj debuted with 20 points for Aris. At Monza, Leclerc went off at 233 kilometres an hour while his wife watched from the paddock - the cameras caught the impact, not what came after it.

The heavier half of the day has one shared shape. The dump piled up for years, the mosquitoes return to the same places every summer, the bribery repeats from directorate to driver, and the fraud began in January and reached the police only in September. Not one of these things surprised anyone. The only difference is when the system switches on - and so far that has always been after the count is finished.
