Three handpans, one night. On October 18 at 19:00 at The Little Five club on Neofit Rilski Street in Sofia, the Handpan Around The World series brings together Croatian musician Ivan Judaš and two of Bulgaria's most recognisable handpan players: Bozhidar Stoichkov, known as Bongoman, and Petar Yordanov - Buni, who performs as Buniverse.
Ivan Judaš is a handpan player and multi-instrumentalist from Zagreb, active on the scenes in Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia. On his Bandcamp page he has released pieces such as "Inception", "Inner Zen" and "Simplicity", and in Sofia he will also play material from the new album he is just finishing. His name also appears among the performers at the Croatian handpan festival in Žrnovnica near Split.
The handpan is younger than many of the people who will be sitting in the audience: a metal disc with indentations, played with the fingers, which appeared less than three decades ago. A whole international scene has grown up around it, from meditative to virtuosic, with influences from jazz and ethno music. The night is planned as solo sets by the three players, followed by joint performances and a jam session.
The organiser is Zendō Sounds, and tickets on bilet.bg cost 20, 30 and 40 euros, or about 1,230 to 2,465 denars. Doors open at 18:30, and the space is small and intimate, so seats are limited.
