Iran is in a period of historic power transition following the death of its long-serving Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in an Israeli airstrike on Tehran. Iran's clerical body, the Assembly of Experts, has appointed his son Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic in an expedited process.

The session was held online due to security threats, and official confirmation of the decision is expected after Khamenei's funeral. The appointment came under strong pressure and amid heightened security tensions the country is facing.

A temporary advisory council was formed to take over some responsibilities during the transitional period. Associated organizations, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, are working to ensure stability and continuity of power.

Ali Khamenei led Iran for nearly 37 years. His death comes in the context of escalating military operations against Iran, following the collapse of negotiations over the country's nuclear program. Tehran responded with retaliatory strikes on various targets in the region.

Khamenei's funeral is planned at the Imam Reza shrine in the city of Mashhad. In Tehran and other Iranian cities, citizens are gathering to express grief over the death of the supreme leader who ruled the country for nearly four decades.
