Ivanka Trump's Wedding 17 Years Ago: A Vera Wang Gown Modelled on Grace Kelly's, 500 Guests and a Cake Almost Two Metres Tall

On October 25, 2009, Ivanka Trump married Jared Kushner at the Trump National golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, in front of around 500 guests. Seventeen years later, the father of the bride is in his second term in the White House, and the groom served as his senior adviser in the first. At the wedding, all that was still a long way off. Back then it was just a wedding.

"I'm a traditional and classic bride," Ivanka said, and the dress proved it. Vera Wang designed it: three layers of ivory lace, appliquéd by hand, inspired by Grace Kelly's 1956 wedding gown. Not a single detail was there to provoke. Grace Kelly's wedding to Prince Rainier III was also a wedding where love and dynasty sat at the same table.

The diamond jewellery came from her own brand, a detail that says a lot about a family that has always known how to turn a private moment into a shop window. The ceremony was Orthodox Jewish, officiated by Rabbi Haskel Lookstein. Ivanka converted to Judaism before the wedding.

Guests included Natalie Portman, Russell Crowe and Anna Wintour, and the cake was made by Sylvia Weinstock: thirteen tiers, almost two metres tall. 500 guests - how many Macedonian weddings would top that number without a second thought?

The dress still looks like it was sewn yesterday, which cannot be said of every fashion choice from 2009. Classics age slowly. Politics, on the other hand, has never stayed on the sidelines for long with the Trumps - not even at a wedding.
